The Penguin Power Filter requires virtually no set-up, making it perfect for any fish lover. Simply follow the manual in connecting the parts and then hang the filter onto the back of your tank. Be sure to prime your filter with aquarium water before you plug it in. Once you have set-up your filter you can adjust the water flow by using the mid-level strainer. After the initial set- up maintenance of this filter is quite easy. Simply remove and replace the filter cartridge after approximately one month and clean the filter as needed. It is also important to maintain an adequate water level in your tank to insure your Penguin Power filter runs quietly and efficiently.

Power Filter Maintenance
For optimal performance it is recommended to clean the impeller cover assembly once a year. The motor should be thoroughly cleaned every three months. Always unplug the Fluval C Power Filter prior to cleaning. Remove cover, filter media and discard water remaining in the filter case. Thoroughly rinse collected debris from the case, impeller cover and impeller assembly using clear lukewarm water. The intake “U” tube and extension tube can be cleaned with a filter stem brush to remove any buildup of deposits. When all parts have been cleaned and thoroughly rinsed, reassemble filter and replace any scheduled media. Install the filter once again back on the aquarium making sure that the filter is tipped slightly forward. Then fill the Fluval C filter box with aquarium water. Finally plug the filter into an electrical outlet and the Fluval C Power Filter will self-prime and begin running in a few seconds.

I loved the design & layout, it seems well thought out. But ultimately I returned it, so it gets 1 star if I didn’t even want it any more.
Biggest issue: NOISE. The motor/impeller rattle like crazy, and it seems like a rather common occurence. All the "silent" reviews are from 2013, but more recent reviews agree with me. The magnetic drive shaft is not anchored on both ends – which means the non drive end is free to wobble and cause these rather obnoxious noises. It seems they changed something – and for the worse.
Second issue: that lovely "second top bio layer" works great for the first few days. But it’s fed by a slipestream of the intake, PRE-filter, so the top of the cartridge just becomes clogged with tank solids.

I love these Fluvals!I have bought three of them to replace the Marineland 350 Penguin filter pumps that I was using.First of all, the Marineland pumps did a good job for a while, but they are extremely noisy even right out of the box, much less after you’ve had them running for a while.It was really annoying.But what’s worse is having to clean the filters.Pretty much no point in cleaning them, so you just have to throw them away, which means you lose some of your bio filter.I know the bio wheels serve that primary purpose, but still.And I hated how when you replaced the filters, when you turned the pumps back on, they spew out a bunch of nastiness into your water…right after you just cleaned the tank!!!So, the Fluvals are awesome first because I can’t hear them.All I hear is the trickle of the water….awesome.Secondly, even on the Marinelands’ best day, these Fluvals keep the water much more clear.Third, they are very simple to clean.There is a little red tab that starts to stick out of the top when the filter needs to be cleaned.So, you just pull it out, rinse it well (make sure you de-chlorinate your rinse water first) and stick it back in.Presto…you still have your bio filter in tact, but your mechanical filter is clean.You can adjust the flow also which is nice.I am very happy with these filters.
UPDATE:Honestly after about a year or so these pumps can get noisy too.If you take out the impeller and clean it up and apply some Vaseline to the shaft, they will quiet down.I still prefer these filter pumps over anything else I’ve used.They are super easy to clean, reliable, and still pretty quiet even after constant use for a couple of years.
New Update:Granted I have had these pumps for a couple of years, but these pumps get super noisy and replacing the impeller doesn’t improve it much or for very long.It’s sux because besides the noise they are excellent.I am thinking of going back to the Penguin??I can’t take the noise.They are quiet for a while, but eventually they are way too loud.I have two small Penguin 200’s on my 40 gallon and they are nearly silent even after 4 years.

I have an old Aquaclear 20 that served me well for many years, but the filtering ability of the unit started to go downhill, and the water never was as clear as I wanted it to be. Fine particles seemed to be beyond its ability to filter out. Hence I was on a search for a better filter.
The Fluval series can be considered an upgrade to the workhorse Aquaclear series. I purchased the Fluval 20 as a replacement for my old filter. Setting it up was easy and straight forward, however after firing it up, water seemed to be leaking from it. Luckily I stayed around to see how it was operating, or many gallons of water would have ended up on the floor. After closer inspection, I found a substantial crack on the side of the filter, which was the culprit. I immediately sent in for a replacement by Amazon, and to its credit, the new unit arrived in a day. Another testimonial to the excellent customer service provided by Amazon.
The second installation went as easy as the first, but with more caution on my part this time. The new unit had no cracks or defects and has been running efficiently for several days now. The water had a haze, due to very small particulates that couldn’t be filtered with the old Aquaclear 20, but after 3 days, the water is crystal clear.
I like the way this filter is compartmentalized for each filter medium, which means I can just pull out the carbon section, filter section, bio-stars, or bio-screen without disturbing the other three. The Aquaclear 20 had to have all three filter sections pulled out at once to exchange one of the media, and this left a horrible backup of debris being pumped back into the tank. Not a good thing and very unsightly.
There seems to be conflicting reports as whether these filters are quiet or noisy. I happen to be in the camp that says it is quiet. When starting up the filter, whether for the first time or when stopping it for feeding or maintenance, the noisiness does happen, but this seems to be the result of air being stuck in the filter. The impeller churns the air trapped in the system and this produces the noise. All that needs to be done is to make sure that the filter is completely filled with water (you can trickle some into the top of the filter as it’s starting up) and this allows the air to be purged. You might have to quickly plug and unplug the filter several times to expel the trapped air. I also added a dab of Vaseline, as suggested by others. on the impeller shaft to help keep things lubricated.
Maintenance for this filter is a breeze, and the fact that you can rinse out the polyfoam filter (not in tap water, but treated water that has the chlorine neutralized so as not to kill off the beneficial bacterial) will save on costs. As a side note, my old Aquaclear 20 motor seems to be a direct twin of the Fluval 20 one, so I’ll keep the old motor/impeller assembly as a back up for the Fluval.
The Fluval C2 is working exceptionally well, and the fish, (and the fish hobbyist, me) are having a great time. One star is deleted from this otherwise high rating due to an apparent lack of quality control or substandard packaging of the filter, as the first one I received was defective with a 3-inch crack down the side. Interestingly enough, another review described the same exact crack location and leak as I had on my filter. I wonder if the defective one was somehow recycled and resold? I guess I’ll never know.

Power Filter Maintenance
For maximum filter operation and efficiency, regular cleaning of the filter and its parts is recommended every two weeks.
Always unplug the Aquaclear Power Filter prior to cleaning.
First you want to remove the cover, filter basket, and discard water remaining in the filter case. Thoroughly rinse collected debris from the case, impeller cover and impeller assembly using clear lukewarm water.
Then intake "U" tube and extension tube can be cleaned with a filter stem brush to remove any build-up of deposits.
When all parts have been cleaned and thoroughly rinsed, reassemble filter and replace any scheduled media. Install the filter once again back on the aquarium making sure that the filter is tipped slightly forward.
Then fill the AquaClear filter box with aquarium water. Finally plug the filter into an electrical outlet and the AquaClear will self-prime and begin running in a few seconds.

Model: 110. Tank: 90 gallon saltwater FOWLER tank. I run the 110, along with two hang-on Aqua-C Remora protein skimmers (the original, medium size model). I have two 8-9 inch long fish, both purchased in 1988 and thus now 30 years old. I have limited mobility in my right leg, so under-tank sumps would be tough for me to manage. Instead I rely on large hang-on (HOT) products that I can reach. I believe the 110 has the highest flow rate of any HOT filter on the US market.
I use the included sponge filter and ceramic media, and add a mesh bag with PhosGuard to absorb phosphates. Nitrates run 20, so my skimmers are cleaning up adequately after two BIG fish, and the AquaClear keeps particulates down and the water clear. I only clean it when flow rate slows, which is every four to six months.
Because replacement parts are not stocked at my local fish store, I bought a second 110 unit to use for parts if needed. So far, after five years of use, the only non-original part presently operating in the filter is the U-shaped siphon tube, which broke because I dropped it (not a defect). You can buy some individual parts online, but the cost adds up, and for me, buying a whole complete unit (albeit sitting in the original box in the garage) made sense, since you have instant access to any needed part. The cost of a 110 at the time I bought unit #2 was $20 below today's cost, so for me it was a bargain.

Quiet, moves a lot of water, and easy to clean.At first I thought this filter was just "ok" because the water wasn't dirty, but it also wasn't crystal clear.But after reading several aquarium forums I learned about people using 100% poly-fil with their filtration.I decided to try this method before going with a canister filter and boy am I glad I did!I cut and placed the poly-fil after the mechanical filtration (sponge) in two layers ( just folded over) to the same length as the sponge and added the other filters ( carbon & bio).The poly-fil will compress so you do not have to worry about everything not fitting once you assemble it.After about 30 minutes I had the clearest water ever!The poly-fil will not affect pH levels and was purchased at a local wal-mart for less than $5 for a 36" x 45" roll.
Update:Also great for saltwater filtration. Just ditch the ceramic rings.

The Penguin Power Filter requires virtually no set-up, making it perfect for any fish lover. Simply follow the manual in connecting the parts and then hang the filter onto the back of your tank. Be sure to prime your filter with aquarium water before you plug it in. Once you have set-up your filter you can adjust the water flow by using the mid-level strainer.
